Cleveland Indians defeat Cards in 1921 Series

Cleveland wins their second World Series

In our 9th World Series matches up the Cleveland Indians who won 103 games on the season against the St. Louis Cardinals. This is the Cards first trip to the series and the Indians third time so far they are one and one. They defeated the Giants in 1908 and lost to the Cubs in 1906. The Indians had 3 20 game winners on their pitching staff Geogre Uhle, 24 wins and Sothoron and Coveleski with 21 a piece. On the offensive side of the ball they have an impressive lineup including Tris Speaker, O'Neill, Elmer Smith, who batted .338 and above and Luke Sewell who collected 123 RBI on the season. They also have George Burns who batted .396, "Smokey" Joe Wood who hit .333, and rookie Riggs Stephenson who hit .367 as part time players. Yes this is the same "Smokey" Joe Wood who pitched for the Red Sox and won 53 games in 4 replay seasons from 1908 to 1915. So Babe Ruth is not the only pitcher turned hitter in Red Sox history. The Cardinals won the national league pennant winning 102 games their pitching staff is also loaded with a 23 game winner, Bill Doak and two 18 gmae winners, Jeff Pfeffer and Bill Pertica. From the plate they have power with Hornsby and McHenry each who hit 23 homers and speed with leadoff hitter Jack Fournier who nabbed 21 bases. McHenry knocked in 160 runs and Hornsby also lead the league in batting with a wicked .421 average. Jack Smith their sixth hitter batted .339 so that shows the depth of their lineup.
The seris starts off with a bang in Cleveland were the home team out slugged the visting Cardinals 11-7 there were 26 hits in the game. Covelski picks up the victory and Pertica the loss. Joe Sewell collected 3 RBI, O'Neill was 4-5 with 2 RBI, and Jamieson hit the game winner for Cleveland. Hornsby was 3-5 and Fournier went 3-4 in 2 RBI in the loss for the Cards.

Game tow in Cleveland and the hometown bats are still buzzing in a 9-4 victory. Once again Joe Sewell led the attack with 2 for 4 day with 3 RBI. Wombgass went 3-4 with a triple and a double. Sothoron picked up the win and Goodwin the loss for the Cards. The series is now headed to St. Louis with the Indians up 2-0.

The change in venue helps the Cardinals bats come alive as they tag Cleveland's ace George Uhle with 4 runs in a 6-2 victory. Bill Doak picks up the win for the redbirds.

The Cards strike again in game four taking a 4-0 lead into the top into the top of the sixth. The damage was done in the bottom of the 4th when they sent eight batters to the plate scoring 3 runs on 4 hits and a walk making the score 4-0. The Indians counter in the 6th where they scored 3 runs on 3 hits and an error. But the Cardinals bounced back with an insurance run in the bottom making the score 5-3 closing out the scoring for the day.

With the series now tied at two a piece the Indians take game 5 in St. Louis and a 3-2 lead in the series when Tris Speaker, who singled in Jamieson in the 7th to tie the score at 4 a piece walked in O'Neill in the top of the 9th for the game winner.

In game six in Cleveland the visiting Cards took an early lead of 6-0 going into the bottom of the 7th inning. They scored 4 of their runs in the top of the 5th when they sent 9 to the plate when they had 2 hits 2 walks and 2 errors. Les Mann tripled scoring Hornsby and Doc Lavan doubled scoring Clemons in the inning. Cleveland mounted a counter attack and managed to score 5 runs in the 7th and 8th on 6 hits a walk and an error. Most of the damage came from Joe Sewell's 2 run single in the eigth. But they were shut down by Jessie Haines the Cards starter in the 9th giving the Cards the series tying win. So were all notted at 3 each.

In game 7 the hometown fans were rewarded with a hitting clinic as their boys belted the Cards pitchers with 20 hits and scored 10 runs to the Cards 5 runs on 13 hits. George Burns and Charlie Jamieson led the charge for the Indians going 4-5 each, Sewell was 3-4, O'Neill 3-5 and George Uhle collected the win. After the game Luke Sewell was named series MVP as he batted .500 and collected 10 RBI to lead his Indians to their second World Series win.

Babe Ruth sets a home run record at 58 more than twice the number of the second place slugger George Kelly of the New York Giants at 25. Rogers Hornsby bats an amazing .421, 3rd all time behind Burkett and Hamilton of the 19th century. Hornsby also amased a spectacular on base percentage of .501 second all time to John McGraw's .518 of Baltimore in 1899. Other stellar performers on the season included Stan Coveleski of the Indians who was second in era at 2.64, 3rd in wins at 21, and second in complete games with 25.

Walter Johnson Walter Johnson led the league in strikeouts

Babe Adams of the Pirates had the lowest era at 2.21 and WHIP at 1.118. He won 15 games on the season with only 4 losses. Walter Johnson at age 34 leads the league in strikeouts and pitches 266.2 innings on the season.

He also hit 3 home runs in two seperate games, on June 10th versus Cleveland and again on August 19th versus Chicago. The only categories he was not in 1st was average, hits and on base percentage that honor went to Rogers Hornsby, who batted an amazing .421, collected 254 hits and had an on base percentage of .501. Wow over 50%! Any other season and Hornsby would have been the MVP hands down.
