Cleveland Naps defeat Giants in their second series

World Series number four, Cleveland returns after a tough loss to the Cubs last year. This time to face the upstart Giants of New York. Once again Cleveland is led by ace pitcher Addie Joss the Naps are back in the series. Joss who won 22 games and posted a low 1.47 era is joined by Glenn Leibert and Bob Rhoades each who won 16 games and Charlie Ceech rounds out the starters with a 1.53 era. Bob Hinchman joins the club this season surrounded by veterans Lajoie, Stovall and Clarke. The Giants starters are led by Christy Mathewson who posted a record tying 27 and an era of 1.69 and Hooks Wiltsewho was 20-7 with a 1.70 era. From the plate Roger Bresnahan and Mike Donlin pack a one-tow puch, batting .300 and .338 respectively.
Game one in New York city where the hometown Giants host their first world series game. The game is a pitchers duel with Addie Joss getting the best of Christy Mathewson. Joss get the win shutting out the Giants on 8 hits. Mathewson takes the loss giving up two runs on 7 hits. The games only runs came on George Perrings triple in the 2nd scoring two runners. The Giants did have bases loaded in the 7th but failed to produce any runs.

Game two in New York and the Giants send Wiltse to the mound versus Rhoads for Cleveland. With the game tied in the top of the 8th at 1 a piece, Bill Hinchman hit a sac fly to break the tie then Nig Clark doubled scoring Lajoie giving Cleveland a two run lead which New York could not over come.

In the game three the venue changes to League Park in Cleveland. The Giants send veteran Joe McGinnity to the mound to face Liebhardt for Cleveland. The both go the distance with the Giants coming out on top this time 4-3. The Giants took the lead when Mike Donlin singles in Fred Tenney in the 7th to take a 3-2 lead. Each team would score another each to make the final 4-3 in favor of the visiting Giants. So far the visiting teams have one each series game.

Game four once again in Cleveland and this time the hometown crowd files out of the park happy their boys take the game 3-2 with 9th inning heroics from Bill Bradley who singled in 2 with the Naps down 2-1 for a 3-2 come from behind victory. They now have a commanding 3 games to 1 edge over the Giants from New York.

Game 5 in the series and once again each team throws out their ace. Joss for Cleveland and Mathewson for the New York club. And once agin Joss outduels Mathewson with a final score of 3-2 for a 4 games to 1 series win. With the Giants up 2-0 from two Fred Tenney run scoring singles in the 3rd and 5th innings the Naps score once in the 5th and again in the 6th to tie the score. With the score tied in the bottom of the 9th with two out Perring singled followed by Theilmann's double down the right field line, but New York was able to hold Perring at third. Clarke then grouned to Mathewson who threw to Tenney but Tenney boubled the ball allowing Perring to score for the win. A bitter loss for the Giants.

1908 Year in Review

Record setting low pitching era's

In this our 4th season in the twentieth century we saw pitching eras drop to an unbelievable low as Rube Waddell shattered the record of 1.46 Addie Joss set last year with a 1.33. Joss followed last years performance with a 1.47,

in fact 4 of the top 5 pitchers are from this year. Another pitching record to fall this season was when Jimmy Dygert of the Athletics, Rube Waddell of the Browns of St. Louis, and Orval Overall of the Chicago Cubs struck out 15 batters. Honus Wagner our batting MVP

Terry Turner Terry Turner slammed walk off home run

hit 3 triples against the Superbas of Brooklyn on september 22nd. Bill Bryne of the St. Louis Cardinals stole 5 bases on the Cubs on september 3rd. In a season of the pitchers both Bill Hinchman of the Cleveland Naps and Red Murray of the St. Louis Cardinals hit two home runs a game in back to back days in the middle of July.

14 home runs, a .585 slugging pct, and an OPS of 1.022. This year's pitching MVP was awarded to New York's ace Christy Mathewson. Christy was tops in wins with 27 tying the league record. He was second in strikeouts with 280, and 6th in era with a 1.69.
