Pittsburgh wins World Series in 12th inning of seventh game

Our second "World Series" is a match up of the same combatants from our first series, the Pirates and the Americans. The series once again goes seven games as the with the final game and series ending in dramtic fasion as the Pirates defeat the Americans of Boston in extra innings in game seven at Exposition Park in Pittsburgh. With the Americans down 2-3 in the top of the 9th they tied the score when Chick Stahl singled in Candy LaChance. Then in the bottom of the 12th the Pirates Honus Wagner singled to start the inning, Ginger Beaumont also singled. Next up was Leach who flied out deep to left sending Wagner to 3rd. Then next up was Claude Ritchey who grounded out to pitcher Cy Young who threw too late to home to catch Wagner as he crossed the plate with the series winning run. Game two in Pittsburgh and their ace starter Deacon Phillippe goes 8 strong innings only to get hit by a line shot in the top of the 9th and has to leave the game. Reilver Veil comes in picks up the win as Kitty Bransfield singles in Claude Ritchey for the game winner in the bottom of the 10th for the victory to tie the series. BOX SCORE GAME TWO Game three and once again as in the first series we travel to Boston and a return to the Huntington Avenue Grounds. This time the visting Pirates pound the hometown Americans 7 to 3. Doheny gets the win for Pittsburgh with Hughes taking the loss for the Americans. Fred Clarke cashed in the game winning hit and was named the MVP for the game. BOX SCORE GAME THREE With the Pirates up 2 games to 1 the Americans win a close in game four, 4 to 3. Gibson collects the win with Jimmy Collins knocking in the game winner to tie the series. Kennedy for Pittsburgh takes the loss. BOX SCORE GAME FOUR Game 5 in Boston and the American's send their ace to the mound, Cy Young who wins his second game of the series sending the series back to Pittsburgh with the Americans up 3 games to 2. Sam Leever once again is on the lossing side of things. BOX SCORE GAME FIVE With the series on the line in game 6 the hometown crowd was not disappointed as the Pirates smashed the Americans 7 to 3. Now with the series tied at 3 games a piece the Pirates force a game 7 for the second time in a row. The Americans send their ace Cy Young to face Pittsbugh's rookie Cy Falkenberg. And as mention at the top of this article the Pirates were able to seek revenge on the Americans and come away with the series win. BOX SCORE GAME SEVEN After two series and 14 games, four of which went extra innings the Pirates and Americans both have won 7 games and one series each.

In this second season of the twentieth century where each league, the national and the american both have 8 teams 140 games were played as was in 1901. The Pirates finished the season 7 games in front of the Chicago Cubs winning the national league pennant. The Americans of Boston on the other hand managed to top the Athletics of Philadelphia by only one game to take the american league pennant. Mike Donlin of the Cincinnati club led the league in batting with a .379 mark.

Bill Hickman of the Cleveland club led the majors with 20 homers and 125 RBI. Pittsburgh's shortstop Honus Wagner led the league in runs at 129 and total bases at 311. ace Eddie Plank recorded the lowest ERA with 1.71. Deacon Phillippe of the Pirates led all pitchers with 27 wins. Single game accomplishments included; Boston's Criger hit three triples on August 1st versus Washington, Mike Donlin the batting champion of Cincinnati collected 7 RBI on May 14th against New York, and Eddie Plank the pitcher who recorded the lowest era on the season strukout 13 as did teammate Rube Waddell.

Honus Wagner of the Pittsburgh is named batting MVP for a second consecutive season. This year he was in the top five in 7 batting catergories,

he was 1st in runs scored at 129, and total bases at 311. He was also third in OPS at .961, third in slugging percentage at .541, and third in stolen bases at 50.

Athletics ace starter Rube Waddell was in the top three in five pitching catergories including, second in era at 1.75, second in wins at 26, first in shutouts at 6, first in strikeouts at 277, second in opponent ave at .213, and third in WHIP at .967.
