New York Yankees celebrate their first series win

In our 8th World Series it will be the New York Yankees in their first series versus the Chicago Cubs. The Cubs won 88 games on the season 2 better than Cincinnati and the Yankees won 84 games on the season 2 better the White Sox. The Cubs are led by their pitching staff of "Grover Cleveland" Pete Alexander and Hippo Vaughn both twenty game winners. The Yankees did not have a twenty game winner on the staff but Shawkey, Carl Mays, and Quinn did win 19, 15 and 15.
The series starts in Chicago, where the series has been played and won twice before in 1906 and again in 1910. The game is an extra inning affair where the visiting Yankees win by the score of 9-8. The score was tied at 3 to 3 in the top of the sixth when the Yankees scored 5 runs on 9 batters to the plate Ping Bodie delivered the big hit with a double that scored 3. The Cubs countered with 3 runs in the bottom of the frame. Charlie Deal hit an inside the park homer scoring 2 runs. Two innings later Deal doubled in two more runs to tie the contest at 8. The score stayed that way until the top of the 11th when Yankees George Mogridge singled in Vick for the win.

Game two at Wrigley field in Chicago pits Alexander against Shawkey, ace versus ace. The visiting club carves up Alexander for 5 runs, Bodie goes 4 for 4, Lewis hits a 2 run homer while Bob Shawkey toses a shutout allowing only five hits. The series heads to New York with the Yankees up 2 games to none.

With the score tied at 1 each the Yankees score 2 runs in the bottom of the eight as Del Pratt singles in two.

The Cubs have no answer in the top of the ninth and they loose 3-1. The Yankees had 14 hits on the day, Peckingpaugh was 4 for 4 and Vick went 3 for 4 in the win.
BOX SCORE GAME THREE
The Cubs bats bounce back in game 4 and score 5 with the help of Max Flack's 3 run homer in the seventh off Carl Mays. Douglas shut out the Yankees holding them to only 6 hits.

In game five the Cubs send Hippo Vaughn to the mound to face Jack Quinn of the Yankees. Max Flack once hits a homer this time in the first with 1 on. Flack plays a key role once again in the sixth when Bill Killifer singles him in for a 3-0 lead. The yankees can only manage to score once in the 7th and one more time in the ninth but it is too little as they take the loss 3-2. The series will now return to Chicago for game six.

In game six the match up is once again Alexander versus Shawkey with the same outcome as last matchup with Shawkey and the Yankees defeating the home town Cubs 3 to 2 for the series win. With the game tied at 2 in the top of the eight Sammy Vick singles in Bodies for the game winning hit. Pitcher Bob Shawkey was name series MVP recording two wins. Del Pratt, and Roger Peckinpaugh for the Yankees as well as Bill Holocher for the Cubs batted .440 in the series.

The season is not all about Babe though there is a new crop of promising rookies that are introduced in this season. They include Frankie Frisch of the New York Giants, Wait Hoyt of the Boston Red Sox, and third baseman for the Cardinals Rogers Hornsby.

Other notable events this season were; Brooklyn's Tommy Griffith's game winning grand slam on July 2nd versus the Phillies. Speaking of grand slams Happy Felsch of the Chicago White Sox hit 2 this season. More about Babe Ruth, he received a record 29 intentional walks this season.

Unfortunately for Boston his flamboyant lifestyle off the field gets him sold to New York for $125,000 on December 26, 1919.

Slim Sallee of the Cincannati Reds is named the pitching MVP. Slim was first in era and win on the season, 1.61 and 22 respectfully. He was also 3rd in WHIP and 5th in complete games.
