New York Giants pound Athletics in first series win

In our 6th World Series it will be the Piladelphia Athletics versus the New York Giants. Both clubs it is their second trip to the series. The Giants won am impressive 110 games on the season and led the second place Pirates by 17.5 games. The Athletics won 100 games and lead the americans of Boston by 3.5 games and the third place Highlanders of New York by 15.5 games. Both clubs hit .305 on the season. The Giants held the lowest era at 2.91 and sent 5 players to the all star game while the Athletics only sent 1.
The series will start in New York where the hometown Giants manhandle the Athletics starter Eddie Plank tagging him with 7 runs in 7 innings. Hooks Wiltse picked up the win for the Giants pitching a complete game allowing only 1 run on 7 hits. Art Fletcher was 3 for 5 and Josh Devore and Larry Doyle collected 2 RBI in the giants win.
BOX SCORE GAME ONE
The Athletics bound back in the second game amasing 9 runs on 12 hits. Cheif Bender held the giants to 4 runs on 5 hits while Rube Marquard gave up 5 runs on 8 hits in seven innings pitched. Danny Murphy went 4 for 5 with a home run and 5 RBI, Bris Lord 2 for 4 with 2 doubles and Frank Baker was 3 for 5 on the day.

The series now moves to Philadelphia in game 3 where the visiting Giants put a licking on the hometown Athletics. Starter Jack Coombs was responsible for 9 runs on 13 hits and left the contest in the eight inning. Christy Mathewson picked up the win for the Giants allowing only 2 runs on 12 hits.

Jack Doyle for the gaints was 3 for 5 with a home run and 2 RBI. Mathewson was 2 for 4 with 2 RBI in his winning cause.

Game four in Philadephia is a little closer contest as the visting Giants defeat the hometown Athletics 6-4. Red Ames picked up the win for New York and Cy Morgan of the Athletics was credited with the loss the series is now 3-1 in favor of the Giants.

Game five in Philadelphia is a slugfest with the hometown team being plastered by the Giants 17 to 7. Athletics started Plank was chased in the 3rd with 1 out and replaced by Russell who took the brunt of the Giants offensive display allow 8 runs on 9 hits in his 3 and 1/3 innings. For the Giants starter Wiltse got the win and batted 4 for 5 and collected 2 RBI in his quest to claim the series clinching win. He was named series MVP for his 2 wins in the series and of all things his bat in game 5. Fred Merkle also was 4 for 5 on the day with 2 RBI. In their defeat Frank Baker hit the series first grand slam off Wiltse in the 7th inning. Baker also held a .458 batting average on the series. Larry Doyle collect 9 RBI for the winning Giants. All the starters in the giants lineup batted .333 or better in series.

our tenth season overall we have a new hit king, Sam Crawford of the Detroit Tigers. Sam collected 259 hits topping "Wee" Willie Keeler's 255 mark of 1895. Sam's team mate Ty Cobb, this years bating MVP also collect 250 hits making for a formable lineup for the Tigers. Ty Cobb also collected 6 hits in one game on July 25 versus the Senators of Washington.

Another record to fall this season is the single season stolen base mark of Sheckard of Baltiomore set in 1899 of 73 by Bob Bescher of the Cincinnati club who stole 93 sacks. Ty Cobb also topped the mark with 82 steals. Fred Luderus of the Phillies led the league in homers with 13.

Birde Cree of the Giants led the league with 24 triples and a slugging percentage of .533. From the mound Pete Alexander led the league in era with a 2.08 mark and led in shutouts with 7.

He was also number 1 in OPS with a .982 mark. Rube Marquard of the Giants was first in wins and strikeouts and in the top 10 of 4 other pitching catergories.
