You probably could have predicted the New York Yankees would win the series to determine the best franchise club, but their competitor was somewhat of a surprise. The San Diego Padres won the NL crown defeating the Atlanta Braves in the NLCS. The Yankees defeated the Cleveland Indians in the ALCS. The Yankees defeated the wild card Seattle Mariners club in the first round. The Padres defeated the wild card Milwaukee Brewers in the first round in the NL. The other playoff clubs, the Pittsburgh Pirates and the Oakland Athletics lost in round one to the Atlanta Braves and the Cleveland Indians.

Individual statistical leaders were in the AL: Yandy Diaz, TBR batting .328, WAR Aaron Judge, NYY 8.8, HR Jose Canseco, OAK 49. Lefty Grove, OAK was low era at 2.41, Wins Ron Guidry, NYY 19, WAR Hal Newhouser, DET 6.7.

NL: Billy Williams, CHC batting .371, and WAR 10.1, HR Shohei Ohtani LAD 42, EAR Mike Caldwell, MIL 2.47, Dazzy Vance LAD 20 wins, WAR Jose Fernandez, MIA 6.8.
