Mathewson Named NL Most Valuable Pitcher Award Winner
Monday, November 6th , 1911
It was a glorious year for Christy Mathewson of the New York Giants.

He finished the season with 28 victories and only 13 losses, with an impressive 2.55 ERA. The talented Giants pitcher started 39 games and struck out 163 batters in 350 innings and won the NL Most Valuable Pitcher Award.

"It means a lot," Mathewson said. "I hadn't really had a chance to sit down and think about it yet. It feels good right now. I can't really put it into words, but I'm sure later on tonight when I have a chance to sit down with my family and think about it, I'll have some words for it. But right now, I'm just happy that it happened this year."

He received 10 first place votes out of a possible 16. Claude Hendrix of the Pittsburgh Pirates finished second in voting with 5 first place votes, while Frank Lange of the Pittsburgh Pirates finished third.
