Round 2 of the playoffs starts today. In the AL the '43 Homestead Grays will face the '27 Yankees, and the '31 St. Louis Stars will take on crosstown rivals the '22 Browns. In the NL the '42 Dodgers will match up against the '19 Reds and the '24 Monarchs will face off against the '25 Pirates.

10/09 Big 3-HR Day for Gehrig

It was a good day for the New York 27 Yankees and an exceptional one for Lou Gehrig. The 24-year-old first baseman sent three bombs out of the park to help the Yankees beat the Homestead 43 Grays, 20-6, at Penmen Field.

"When you're in the zone, the game really slows down," Gehrig said when asked about his performance later. "I couldn't even tell you what pitches were thrown. Today feels great, but it is a long season and tomorrow is another day."

For the day, he scored 4 times, drove in 7 runs and smacked 4 hits in 5 at-bats.

Lou Gehrig hit a three-run home run off Charlie Shields in the 1st, hit a two-run home run off Charlie Shields in the 2nd, walked in the 3rd, hit a two-run home run off Eugene Jones in the 5th, grounded out in the 6th and doubled in the 8th.

For the year, Gehrig has hit .362 with 40 home runs, 159 RBIs and scored 126 runs.

In the same contest. Bob Meusel really sizzled at the plate in his team's 20-6 win over the Homestead 43 Grays. The New York 27 left fielder blistered Homestead 43 for 5 hits in 6 at-bats.

"Meusel was too tough to get out today," the Grays skipper said in the postgame interview. "No matter what we threw him, he hit it. And he hit some good pitches, too."

Bob Meusel singled in the 1st, struck out in the 2nd, singled in the 3rd, singled in the 5th, singled in the 6th and singled in the 8th.

This year, Meusel is hitting at a .371 pace with 14 home runs and 97 RBIs. He has played in 139 games and scored 134 times.

'27 Yankees Advance to Round 3

The New York 27 Yankees have advanced to the Round 3, with a 8-7 triumph at Yankee Stadium over the Homestead 43 Grays.

The win sealed a 4-1 series win for New York 27.

The series MVP honor went to Yankees right fielder Babe Ruth.

"It takes every guy in that dugout to win games, not just me," Ruth said afterward. "I'm proud to be moving on."

The New York 27 Yankees don't know who they will face in the next round. They will play the winner of the St. Louis 22 Browns - St. Louis 31 Stars series. St. Louis 31 leads the series 3 games to 1. The Round 3 schedule will be announced after the Round 2 finishes.

St. Louis '31 Stars Advances to Round 3

The excitement in St. Louis 31 is palpable as the local club has advanced through the Round 2.

The St. Louis 31 Stars downed the St. Louis 22 Browns 9-4 tonight at Sportsmans Park, to take the series 4-1.

"Things are going to get crazy in St. Louis 31 for the Round 3. The fans are going to be behind us 100 percent, we know that," said Mule Suttles, who earned MVP honors.

"There's a lot of motivation in our clubhouse right now to make sure we give them something to cheer about."

For the series, Suttles hit .333 with a .400 on-base percentage. He had 7 hits, 2 home runs, 6 RBI and scored 5 runs.

10/14 Pittsburgh '25 Stymied by Bell

The Pittsburgh 25 Pirates were almost helpless in their 14-0 loss to the Kansas City 24 Monarchs and hurler William Bell. Bell kept the Pirates confused all game, spinning a 6-hit shutout.

"Tip your hat to Bell," Pittsburgh 25 manager Jim Cundy said in a postgame interview. "He kept us off balance all night."

The 27-year-old right-hander had 1 walk and no strikeouts in a strong performance.

"It just happened to be one of those games where even when I made mistakes, they either fouled them off or someone would make a fine defensive play," Bell said. "It was just one of those games that things went my way."

This season, Bell has 8 wins and 17 losses and a 4.60 ERA.

Cincinnati '19 Wins round 2

Edd Roush has led his Cincinnati 19 Reds to a Round 2 victory.

Cincinnati 19's center fielder was named series MVP after playing an instrumental role in winning the series 4-1 and eliminating the Brooklyn 42 Dodgers.

"See the ball, hit the ball," he said. "It's simple what I did this series."

The club advanced to the Round 3 with a 5-4 triumph at Redland Field in the deciding game.

Roush was red hot in the series, which saw him put up a .476 average, as well as 1 home runs and 6 RBI.

The Cincinnati 19 Reds don't know who they will face in the next round. They will play the winner of the Pittsburgh 25 Pirates - Kansas City 24 Monarchs series. Kansas City 24 leads the series 3 games to 1. The Round 3 schedule will be announced after the Round 2 finishes.

'24 Monarchs Win Round 2

Fans at Forbes Field saw the Round 2 come to a close today, as the Kansas City 24 Monarchs defeated the Pittsburgh 25 Pirates by a score of 14-0, and advanced to the Round 3.

Kansas City 24 won the series 4-1 and will now continue their march toward the Round 4.

"It feels good to be moving on, I can't deny it," said starting pitcher Bullet Rogan, who was named series MVP. "Not everyone thought we'd make it this far."

The Kansas City 24 Monarchs will play against the Cincinnati 19 Reds in the next round. Cincinnati 19 won their series against the Brooklyn 42 Dodgers 4 games to 1. The Round 3 schedule will be announced after the Round 2 finishes.

Round 3 is all set! In the AL the '31 St. Louis Stars will face the '27 New York Yankees. In the NL the '24 Kansas City Monarchs will head to Cincinnati to face the '19 Reds.

Behind Rogan, Kansas City '24 Blanks Cincinnati '19, 6-0

It was not a good day at the plate for the Cincinnati 19 Reds. They came up empty when it mattered against Kansas City 24 Monarchs right-hander Bullet Rogan, who scattered 9 hits across 9 innings and held the Reds scoreless.

"We had 9 hits so I know he wasn't completely untouchable, but he was close," Cincinnati 19 manager Pat Moran said later.

Rogan chalked up 4 strikeouts and 2 walks in the 6-0 Monarchs win.

This season, Rogan has compiled a 8-6 mark, 3.22 ERA and made 15 starts.

10/20 Razor-sharp Ruether Blanks Kansas City '24

Dutch Ruether hurled nothing but zeros at the Kansas City 24 Monarchs in an impressive outing at Redland Field. The Cincinnati 19 pitcher allowed 4 hits, fanned 4, and walked 4 in blanking Kansas City 24, 4-0.

"There were a lot of frustrated guys walking back to the dugout," Kansas City 24 manager Jim Cundy said. "Not a fun day."

So far in 34 appearances this season, Ruether has recorded 21 wins and sustained 11 losses. He has pitched 278.2 innings, yielded 263 hits, fanned 106 and has a 3.13 ERA.
