Pillette Is AL's Best Rookie
Tuesday, October 19th , 1954
It was good to make the team roster in the spring... better to make the New York starting rotation... great to win 20 games... and even greater to be voted the 1954 AL Rookie of the Year Award.

It all happened to rookie starter Duane Pillette in his debut season.

He pitched his way to a 20-9 record in 30 starts, tossed 239.2 innings, gave up 201 hits, fanned 89, walked 78 and compiled a 2.52 ERA. Opposing hitters batted .229 against him.

He received 16 first place votes, as a unanimous winner. Bob Grim of the New York Yankees finished second in voting, while Alex Grammas of the Baltimore Orioles finished third.
