2000 Hits for Vernon Wednesday, September 22nd , 1954 By going 3-for-4 in the Chicago 10-8 win over Cleveland, Mickey Vernon reached the 2000-hit mark. The Cleveland Stadium fans, friend and foe, burst into applause and Vernon's teammates hugged and congratulated him on his achievement. "The guys began the countdown weeks ago," said the newest member of the 2000 Club. "I don't know who was more excited -- them or me."
