Pesky Gets Number 2000
Friday, September 17th , 1954
"It would have been a lot nicer if my 2000th hit had won the game," said Johnny Pesky after the Washington Senators had been tripped up by the Boston Red Sox, 6-4, spoiling his big day. The Senators second baseman gained access to the exclusive 2000-hit club by going 2-for-5 in the game played at Griffith Stadium.
"The standing ovation by the fans is not something I will ever forget," Pesky said to the press after the game. "I think even the Red Sox fans were cheering me."
Lifetime Pesky has compiled a .278 batting average and collected 2001 hits, 16 home runs and 609 RBIs.
