Cobb Moves up in Class to .400 Club
Saturday, October 14th , 1911
Coaches tell ballplayers that the best hitters make an out 7 times out of 10. That's 3 base hits per 10 at-bats. To average 4 base hits per 10 at-bats, well, that only happens for the best of the best -- the .400 hitters.

Detroit center fielder Ty Cobb certainly qualifies as one of the best. He hit an astronomical .428 this season. "He's the best pure hitter I've ever seen," his manager said. "And I've been around some great players."

His numbers this year also included 42 doubles, 28 triples and 11 home runs. The newest member of baseball's .400 Club also scored 153 times and batted in 118 runs.
