Chicago Downs Pittsburgh as Hughes Tosses 5-0 Shutout
Monday, October 9th , 1911
All went well for Tom Hughes of the Chicago Cubs as he pitched his team to a shutout victory, 5-0, over the Pittsburgh Pirates, limiting them to 3 hits. In the postgame interview, both managers had glowing things to say about Hughes on the day.
"Tom's got a good selection of pitches he can throw at a guy," said Cubs manager . "He changes speed, gives different looks to different hitters. When he's on his game, he's quite a handful."
In the contest, the Chicago right-hander rang up 6 and surrendered 1 walk.
"He didn't give us any second chances," said Pirates manager . "It's a guessing game with him and today we were always guessing wrong."
Looking at his season stats, Hughes has won 14 and lost 17, collecting 129 strikeouts and 117 walks in 288 innings with a 4.59 ERA.
