NL Hands Out Rookie of the Year Award Friday, October 6th , 1916 Things are coming up roses for Heavy Johnson of the Chicago Cubs. This blossoming star finished his first year in the NL by taking the 1916 Rookie of the Year Award. The 21-year-old catcher fashioned a .298 batting average with a .333 on-base percentage, solid numbers to go with his 10 home runs, 97 RBIs and 69 runs scored. He received 20 first place votes, as a unanimous winner. Art Nehf of the St. Louis Cardinals finished second in voting, while George Carr of the Cincinnati Reds finished third.
