The Houston Astros picked up a win at Minute Maid Park, knocking off the Boston Red Sox, 6-3. On the mound for Houston was right-hander Joe Niekro. He played a key role in the triumph. Mike Scott picked up his 1st save of the season. The first-place Astros, at 53-37, lead the American League Western Division by 5 games.

Dickie Thon had a big bases-clearing triple for the Astros in the bottom of the first inning. With Houston leading 2-0 and the bases loaded, he got a fastball from Smoky Joe Wood and swatted a triple to right-center. It was his 2nd triple of the season, and more importantly, it put the Astros ahead, 5-0.

"Good win for us," said Niekro. "We'll strap it on and go after the next one."
