O.co Coliseum was the site of an exciting ballgame between the New York Yankees and Oakland Athletics.
The Oakland Athletics got a sterling performance from pitcher Lefty Grove, but the New York Yankees still prevailed, 3-2. Grove threw 7.1 innings of 3-hit ball. New York reliever Rich Gossage picked up the win, upping his record to 5-0. Dennis Eckersley was saddled with the loss. Mariano Rivera notched his 25th save of the season.
New York took advantage of an error in the top of the ninth inning. The game was tied, 1-1, when Yogi Berra hit a 2-run single that was misplayed. It put the Yankees in front, 3-1.
"We'll take some time to unwind," said Berra, "and then get after it again."
The Yankees raised their record to 51-33.
