8-7 Win for Kansas City Hard-Earned
Oakland third baseman Eric Chavez had a good game in a losing cause. His team fell, 8-7, to Kansas City in 11 innings. Chavez went 2 for 3 with 2 home runs. He drove in 4 runs and scored twice. Jeff Montgomery, now 3-0, picked up the win in relief. He allowed no runs on 2 hits in 2 innings. Dan Quisenberry notched his 1st save in 2 chances.

The game was at a stalemate until shortstop Freddie Patek came to bat in the top of the 11th. Facing Oakland pitcher Tim Hudson, he hit a first pitch slider for a run-scoring single. It was a game-changer, putting Kansas City on top, 7-6.

"We refused to lose," said winning manager .

With the win, Kansas City raised its record to 40-39.
