Baltimore pitcher Jim Palmer did his part in helping his team beat the Detroit Tigers, 4-2. The right-hander kept opposing batters from doing too much damage. The winner was Palmer. He threw 7.1 innings of 6-hit ball. The loser was Hal Newhouser. Stu Miller notched his 21st save in 24 chances.

The Orioles got a big hit from left fielder Clint Thomas. Facing Detroit pitcher Hal Newhouser in the bottom of the sixth, Thomas pounded a 2-run home run to right. His 12th home run of the season put the Orioles ahead, 4-2.

Thomas told a Baltimore Chronicle reporter that he was "gratified" with the win.

The 4th-place Orioles improved to 37-40.
