Athletics Get Clutch Win, 4-3
|
The Oakland Athletics cut down the Boston Red Sox by the score of 4-3, with the largest share of the credit going to third baseman Eric Chavez. Chavez went 2-3 with a home run and a walk, while adding 3 RBI and scoring once for the Athletics. Dennis Eckersley stitched up the save, his 9th. The Athletics, at 33-27, sit in second place in the American League Western Division.
Chavez had a timely hit for Oakland in the top of the eighth. With Oakland trailing 3-1, he turned a 2-0 fastball into a 3-run home run. It was his 6th home run of the season, making it 4-3, Oakland.
"We'll pocket this win," said Chavez, "and then go after another."
