Win Goes to Red Sox in Tight Contest
|
The Boston Red Sox outlasted the Kansas City Royals in an extra-inning thriller.
The Boston Red Sox handed the Kansas City Royals an extra-inning, 5-4 defeat at Kauffman Stadium. Left Fielder Ted Williams starred for Boston. He was 2 for 4 with a home run, a walk, and was hit by a pitch, while scoring 2. The winner was Boston reliever Jonathan Papelbon, now 2-4. The loser was Steve Mingori. Tom Gordon notched his 1st save in 3 chances.
It could have been a different outcome for Boston, had it not been for Pete Hill, the 29-year old center fielder . Hill contributed a run-scoring ground out in the top of the first inning to put Boston up, 2-0.
"Games like this one keep the antacid makers in business," quipped Kansas City manager .
With the victory, the Red Sox record stands at 29-32.
