The New York Yankees topped the Detroit Tigers, 5-4, at Yankee Stadium. New York center fielder Mickey Mantle was a spark plug for the offense. He went 3-5 with a triple and 2 singles, while adding 4 RBI. By defeating Detroit, the first-place Yankees improved to 38-22.

The game was decided with two out in the bottom of the ninth. With New York trailing 4-3, Mantle hit a fastball from Willie Hernandez for a 2-run single. In the blink of an eye, the Yankees had a walk-off win.

"The crowd went wild," Mantle said.
