Dick Whitworth could take little solace in pitching a good game. The fact is his Chicago White Sox lost, dropping a 3-1 decision to the Texas Rangers at U.S. Cellular Field. The winner was Pete Richert in relief. His record improves to 2-2. Dick Whitworth took the loss. Jeff Russell picked up the save for Texas, his 12th of the year.
Texas used a timely hit from Ray Dandridge to get the win. The pinch hitter stroked a run-scoring double in the top of the seventh inning to put the Rangers ahead, 2-1. It was his only hit in 1 at-bat, but it was a difference-maker.
"Tough loss," said Chicago manager . "But that's how the cookie crumbles."
The Rangers now have a mark of 24-34.
