Mariners Use Late-Game Magic to Beat Tigers, 5-3
The Mariners grabbed a win, 5-3, at Safeco Field, overcoming a fine effort from Detroit pitcher Jim Bunning. Bunning went 7 innings and allowed 1 run. Seattle reliever Arthur Rhodes picked up the win to move to 1-0. John Hiller suffered the loss. Seattle sits in third place in the American League Western Division at 25-29.

The Mariners beat the Tigers in part due to timely hitting. Case in point: the two-out single Jud Wilson produced in the bottom of the eighth. Batting against Harry Coveleski, Wilson gave his team the lead, 5-3, when he hit a 2-run single.

"That's what I love about baseball," said Wilson. "No matter how good or how bad you did, you get to wake up the next day and start all over."
