Rangers Edge Seattle in Pitching Duel
|
Erik Hanson pitched well, but the Seattle Mariners still lost the game, falling, 1-0, to the Texas Rangers at Rangers Ballpark in Arlington. Nolan Ryan, the winner, improved to 3-2. He held the Mariners to no runs on 3 hits over 6.1 innings, while striking out 4 and walking 0. Jeff Russell, summoned from the bullpen, notched his 11th save.
The Mariners had been locked in a 0-0 tie with the Rangers going into the bottom of the sixth inning. That changed quickly when the 27-year old third baseman Newt Joseph came to the plate. Joseph hit a run-scoring double on a 1-1 changeup from Seattle hurler Erik Hanson. It was Joseph's 15th double of the year.
"You can't win if you don't score any runs," said losing manager . "You don't need Confucius to tell you that."
The third-place Rangers are now 22-26, the Mariners 21-27.
