The New York Yankees had to overcome a fine effort from Los Angeles pitcher Frank Tanana to win, 4-2, in 10 innings at Angel Stadium of Anaheim. Tanana went 6.2 innings and allowed no runs. New York reliever Sparky Lyle picked up the win, upping his record to 2-4. Chuck Finley absorbed the loss. New York goes to 30-18. The win puts them 4 games up in their division.

Mickey Mantle came through with a big-time hit for New York. The center fielder smacked a 2-run home run in the top of the tenth inning to give his team the lead, 4-2. It was his only hit, but it was clutch.

Mantle told a New York Times reporter that he felt "euphoric" after the win.
