Opening day festivities have begun throughout the league. Fans of the Tampa Bay Rays were eager to watch James Shields square off against Ted Trent of the visiting Minnesota Twins. In the end, the Rays won the game, 3-1, with James Shields leading the way. Grant Balfour earned save number 1 this season.

In the bottom of the third, Yandy Díaz delivered a clutch hit. With two gone and runners on 1st and 2nd, the Tampa Bay first baseman hit a run-scoring single, putting the Rays in front, 3-1.

"James is one tough son of a gun," said Tampa Bay manager .
