The Toronto Blue Jays put one in the win column with an opening day 5-2 triumph over the Seattle Mariners. The crowd at Rogers Centre watched Jimmy Key put on a fine performance. Duane Ward was credited with the save for Toronto, his 1st of the season.

Bo Bichette took Seattle hurler Randy D Johnson deep in the bottom of the fifth. His 2-run home run put the Blue Jays on top, 4-2. In all, Bichette had 1 single in addition to the home run, while going 2 for 3.
