Rays Topple Yankees with Late Rally

The Rays grabbed a win, 6-3, at Yankee Stadium, overcoming a fine effort from New York pitcher Lefty Gomez. Gomez went 6.2 innings and allowed 3 runs. Tampa Bay reliever Esteban Yan picked up the win to move to 2-1. Sparky Lyle suffered the loss. Grant Balfour finished to wrap up his 10th save.
It could have been a different outcome for Tampa Bay, had it not been for Yandy Díaz, the 31-year old first baseman . Díaz contributed a run-scoring single in the top of the ninth inning to put Tampa Bay up, 4-3.
"Very pleased with the effort on our side," said Díaz.
Tampa Bay goes to 16-22, New York to 20-15.
