Tampa Bay Stymied by Detroit, 2-0
|
The Detroit Tigers downed the Tampa Bay Rays, 2-0, at Comerica Tigers Park. Detroit pitcher Hal Newhouser had a scintillating performance. Willie Hernandez finished to wrap up his 5th save. The Rays fall to 14-17 and continue their wobbly start to the 2014 season.
Bill Freehan dealt the Rays a blow in the bottom of the fourth. Batting with runners on 1st and 2nd and Detroit leading 1-0, Freehan, who is rated as the 45th best prospect by BNN, hit a 1-2 fastball for a run-scoring single.
"We did just enough to win," Newhouser said.
