Pirates Win with Late Rally
|
Cincinnati got a terrific performance from pitcher Satchel Paige, but it wasn't enough to beat the Pittsburgh Pirates. Pittsburgh won the PNC Park contest, 3-2. Paige threw 8.1 innings of 5-hit ball for the losing team. Kent Tekulve snagged the win in relief. He goes to 2-4 on the season. Rob Dibble suffered the loss. With the win over Cincinnati, the Pirates improved to 57-74.
The knockout blow came in the bottom of the 11th inning. That's when center fielder Andrew McCutchen stepped to the plate with the bases loaded and hit a run-scoring single, to win the ballgame.
Said losing manager : "Not taking anything away from them, but we swung the bats better than what it showed."
