Irvin Helps Giants Beat Cubs, 8-4
San Francisco designated hitter Monte Irvin made his presence felt in the 8-4 Giants triumph over the Chicago Cubs. Irvin went 4-5 with 4 singles. He drove in 5 runs and scored once. Gary Lavelle wrapped it up, recording his 2nd save. The Giants improved their record to 75-55 with the win over Chicago.

With San Francisco trailing 2-1 in the bottom of the fifth, Irvin hit a 2-run single off Chicago hurler Clark Griffith. It was the 137th hit of the season for Irvin and put his team ahead, 3-2.

"We took home the win," said Irvin. "What's not to like?"
