The Chicago Cubs faced a tough opponent in Washington pitcher Dennis Martinez, but did just enough to pull out the victory at Wrigley Field by a final score of 3-2. Martinez went 7 innings and allowed 3 runs. Sean Marshall was credited with the save, his 28th in 32 tries. The winning streak has now reached 4 games for Chicago.

Billy Herman had a big 2-run double for the Cubs in the bottom of the fifth inning. With Chicago leading 1-0 and runners on 2nd and 3rd, he got a sinker from 37-year old right-handed pitcher Dennis Martinez and swatted a double to left-center. It was his 8th double of the season, and more importantly, it put the Cubs ahead, 3-0.

Chicago manager called it "a good, solid win."
