The New York Yankees could not turn a fine performance from pitcher Red Ruffing into a win. Instead, the Chicago White Sox prevailed, 5-4. Ruffing threw 5.2 innings of 4-hit ball. Doc White zipped up his 2nd save. New York is 14-11 after the defeat.
The game was at a stalemate until first baseman Ben Taylor came to bat in the top of the eighth. Facing New York pitcher Sparky Lyle, he hit a first pitch fastball for a run-scoring single. It was a game-changer, putting Chicago on top, 5-4.
"We were the better team," crowed Taylor.
