Eager fans turned out for a matchup between the New York Mets and San Francisco Giants.

The New York Mets spoiled a good performance by San Francisco third baseman Freddie Lindstrom, bumping off San Francisco, 4-3, at Citi Field. Lindstrom belted 2 home runs. New York reliever John Franco picked up the win, upping his record to 5-4. Christy Mathewson was saddled with the loss. Tom Seaver earned his 27th save in 29 tries.

New York took a 4-3 lead on Keith Hernandez's 23rd double of the season. The 2-run double, which Hernandez hit in the bottom of the eighth, left San Francisco pitcher Sergio Romo shaking his head.

"Winning is seldom easy in this league," said Hernandez.

With the win, the Mets have a record of 65-55.
