The New York Mets knocked off the San Francisco Giants, 5-3, at Citi Field. Cleon Jones was a big reason New York won. The left fielder went 2 for 3 with a home run and a double. He scored 2 runs and drove in 2. New York reliever Tug McGraw picked up the win to move to 3-5. Carl Hubbell suffered the loss. Tom Seaver earned save number 26 this season.

Jones had an important at-bat with a runner on 2nd in the bottom of the seventh, when he hit a run-scoring double. The Mets went on to win.

"I thought we competed really well," said Mets manager . "I thought the energy was really good."

The third-place Mets now sit at 64-54.
