Phillies Trip Pirates, 7-6
|
Led by Lefty O'Doul, the Philadelphia Phillies defeated the Pittsburgh Pirates, 7-6, in 10 innings. O'Doul, a native of San Francisco, California, belted 2 home runs, while adding 3 RBI and scoring twice for the Phillies. Philadelphia reliever Mitch Williams picked up the win, raising his record to 3-2. Joel Hanrahan was tagged with the loss. Philadelphia, now 65-45, holds down first place in the National League Eastern Division.
The Phillies got a clutch hit from shortstop Dave Bancroft. In the bottom of the tenth, he hit a run-scoring single to left-center, to win the game for the Phillies.
"Sometimes you get the ball in the right spot and it goes," said O'Doul.
