Cardinals Eke Out 2-1 Win Versus Philadelphia
|
Zack Wheeler, who is tied for 10th in the NL in wins with 10, pitched well, but the Philadelphia Phillies still fell short, losing, 2-1, to the St. Louis Cardinals at Citizens Bank Park. The winning pitcher was 26-year old right-handed pitcher Dizzy Dean. He tossed 97 pitches over 7.1 innings, allowing 1 run on 6 hits. With the victory, the Cardinals upped their record to 56-52.
St. Louis used a well-timed hit by Willie McGee to capture the win. The center fielder socked a run-scoring double in the top of the fifth inning to put the Cardinals ahead, 2-1. Though it was his only hit in 4 at-bats, it was important.
McGee told a St. Louis News reporter that the win made him feel "exuberant."
