Diamondbacks Lose as Giants Stage Late Rally
San Francisco Giants starter Christy Mathewson hurled his team past the Arizona Diamondbacks, 8-1. Gary Lavelle, now 7-2, was credited with the win in 2.1 innings of relief. He allowed no runs on 1 hit, while striking out 3 and walking 0. San Francisco, now 60-46, holds down second place in the National League Western Division.

Mel Ott found himself in a pressure situation in the bottom of the eighth. Facing Arizona hurler Brad Ziegler, the 20-year-old right fielder drew a walk, driving in 1 run. His 28th walk of the season put the Giants on top, 2-1.

"I think every team will tell you that the pitching sets the tone, especially the starters," said San Francisco skipper .
