Cubs Net 2-1 Win
|
The Chicago Cubs picked up a win at Citizens Bank Park, knocking off the Philadelphia Phillies, 2-1. On the mound for Chicago was right-hander Clark Griffith. He played a key role in the triumph. Griffith got the win, improving to 7-9. He gave up 4 hits and walked 1 over 8 innings. He allowed 1 run. The win puts the Cubs at 45-58, while the Phillies drop to 57-43.
The Phillies had been locked in a 1-1 tie with the Cubs going into the top of the fifth inning. That changed quickly when the 30-year old center fielder Hack Wilson came to the plate. Wilson hit a solo home run on a first pitch fastball from Philadelphia hurler Ron Reed. It was Wilson's 8th home run of the year.
In postgame comments to the Chicago Bulletin, Griffith said, "If the effort is there, the wins will come."
