The San Diego Padres picked up a win at Wrigley Field, knocking off the Chicago Cubs, 7-3. Starting pitcher Ed Whitson was a big reason why. In 6.1 innings, Whitson surrendered 4 hits, while striking out 4 and walking 2. He allowed 2 runs. The last-place Padres lifted their record to 44-58.

San Diego won the game in part because of Dave Winfield. The right fielder ripped a 3-run home run in the top of the first inning to put the Padres ahead, 4-0. For the game, Winfield had 1 double and 1 home run in 4 at-bats.
