Pitcher Bob Gibson was rock solid in helping the St. Louis Cardinals beat the Los Angeles Dodgers, 2-1, in 10 innings. St. Louis reliever Bruce Sutter picked up the win, upping his record to 3-6. Eric Gagne absorbed the loss. The loss makes Los Angeles 57-42.

Up to bat in the bottom of the tenth, 29-year old second baseman Rogers Hornsby had a chance to be the hero. Los Angeles pitcher Eric Gagne wanted to foil that plan. But with no outs, Hornsby hit a sacrifice fly. The Cardinals had themselves a thrilling win.

During his postgame press conference, Cardinals manager told reporters that he expected a tight game from the get-go. "This had the potential to go down to the wire, and it certainly didn't disappoint," he said, later quipping, "it might've been a little less nerve-racking if I had been watching the game from my couch!"
