Williams Goes Off, But Mets Win
Chicago left fielder Billy Williams was sensational. He hit 2 home runs. But it wasn't enough to rally his team to a win. New York beat the Cubs, 6-3. New York starter Terris McDuffie was credited with the win after throwing 95 pitches over 6.1 innings. His record now stands at 5-6. Tom Seaver was credited with the save. He has now successfully converted 23 of 24 save opportunities.

An inflection point occurred with no one out in the bottom of the second. That's when Mets third baseman David Wright hit a curveball from Clark Griffith for a 2-run single. Just like that, New York was up, 2-1.

"You never take a win for granted in this league," said Wright.

The win hiked the New York record to 55-46.
