San Francisco Beats St. Louis, 3-1
|
In a low-scoring contest between the San Francisco Giants and the St. Louis Cardinals, Carl Hubbell, who is tied for 7th in the NL in wins with 10, proved to be the difference. The San Francisco left-hander earned props for his performance in the 3-1 Giants win. With this game in the books, San Francisco is 51-40, St. Louis 47-46.
The Giants got a big hit from designated hitter Monte Irvin. Facing St. Louis pitcher Dizzy Dean in the top of the sixth, Irvin pounded a solo home run to right. His 23rd home run of the season put the Giants ahead, 2-1.
"Everything was on," said Hubbell.
