The Philadelphia Phillies topped the San Diego Padres, 5-2, the lion's share of the credit going to designated hitter Lefty O'Doul. On the day, O'Doul went 3-4 with a home run and a double. He scored 2 runs and drove in 2 for the Phillies. At 53-37, the Phillies find themselves in first place in the National League Eastern Division.

Mike Schmidt had a big 2-run double for the Phillies in the bottom of the first inning. With Philadelphia trailing 1-0 and runners on 1st and 2nd, he got a curveball from 32-year old left-handed pitcher Bruce Hurst and swatted a double to center. It was his 7th double of the season, and more importantly, it put the Phillies ahead, 2-1.

"Trying isn't good enough in this league," said Schmidt. "You've got to get results."
