Big Day by Betts Sparks 3-2 Boston Win
|
Riding the 3-hit performance of the 25-year old right fielder Mookie Betts, the Boston Red Sox defeated the New York Yankees, 3-2. Boston reliever Tom Gordon picked up the win, upping his record to 3-0. Sparky Lyle absorbed the loss. New York is 14-10 after the defeat.
Carl Yastrzemski helped out the Boston cause in the bottom of the sixth inning with a run-scoring single. For the game, the left fielder went 1-4.
Betts was in a reflective mood after the contest. He told the Boston Times, "Every game is it's own challenge. That's what keeps the competitive fire alive."
