Milwaukee Brewers starter Mike Caldwell was dealing. He helped his team knock off the Washington Nationals, 5-1. Caldwell, now 9-7, was the winner. In 6 innings, he gave up 4 hits, while striking out 3, walking 1, and allowing no runs. Ben Sheets earned the save for Milwaukee, his 2nd.
In the top of the first, Christian Yelich delivered a clutch hit. With two gone and a runner on 2nd, the Milwaukee left fielder hit a run-scoring single, putting the Brewers in front, 5-1.
Yelich called the win "a collective effort."
By defeating Washington, the third-place Brewers improved to 35-42.
