The Chicago White Sox used the hitting of designated hitter Heavy Johnson to subdue the Detroit Tigers, 10-9. For the game, Johnson went 2-4 with a home run, a double, and a walk. He scored 2 runs and drove in 4. Chicago reliever Bobby Jenks picked up the win to move to 1-1. Willie Hernandez suffered the loss. Doc White wrapped it up, recording his 1st save.

The game was at a stalemate until second baseman Eddie Collins Sr came to bat in the top of the ninth. Facing Detroit pitcher John Hiller, he hit a first pitch changeup for a run-scoring single. It was a game-changer, putting Chicago on top, 10-9.

"No shortage of offense this time around," said Johnson.

The win puts Chicago at 11-12.
