Pirates Lose at Home, 3-2
|
Starting pitcher Zack Wheeler gave the Philadelphia Phillies a rock-solid performance, helping his team defeat the Pittsburgh Pirates, 3-2, at PNC Park. The winning pitcher was Wheeler, now 6-4. He tossed 6.1 innings of 5-hit ball, while walking 1 and fanning 4. Mitch Williams earned save number 15.
Philadelphia first baseman Mike Schmidt helped the Phillies go up, 2-1, in the top of the sixth inning. With the game tied, Schmidt hit a run-scoring single off Pittsburgh pitcher Jesse Tannehill.
"Zack was Zack," said Phillies manager . "We know what we'll get whenever he takes the mound."
The first-place Phillies are now 44-23, the Pirates 34-36.
