Ed Whitson propelled his team to victory over the Cincinnati Reds. The final score was 7-5, San Diego. Trevor Hoffman earned the save, his 20th, for the Padres. The Padres go to 31-34, putting them third in the National League Western Division.

San Diego used a clutch at-bat from Randy Ready to capture the win. The second baseman hammered a 3-run home run in the top of the second inning to put the Padres ahead, 3-0. It was his lone hit in 4 at-bats, but it was a humdinger.

"Nice to see our side come away with the win," Whitson said after the game.
