The Boston Red Sox defeated the Oakland Athletics, 5-1, at O.co Coliseum. Boston third baseman Jimmy Collins had a superb performance. He went 3 for 4 with a home run, a triple, and a double. He scored 2 times. Bill Gatewood was the winner. He's now 2-1. The loser was 25-year old right-handed pitcher Chief Bender. With the win, Boston goes to 13-11.
Early in the game, Collins had a solo home run for Boston. It was his 2nd home run of the season and put the Red Sox on top, 1-0.
"It all comes down to competing and our guys love to compete," said Red Sox manager .
